Hi, I’m Amanda.
I teach American Mahjong locally in Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park and the surrounding areas, just west of Chicago. I’ve helped dozens of new players go from “What is happening?” to confidently playing with friends.
I created this online course so you can learn in a relaxed, step-by-step way — even if you’ve never seen a Mahjong tile before.

Mahjong takes a little time to get used to — and that’s part of the fun.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s understanding enough to play, keep learning, and enjoy the experience with other people.
This course helps you get comfortable with the rules, the card, and the flow of the game — so you can start playing sooner and have more fun doing it.
If you’ve been curious about Mahjong, this is your invitation.
Learn the game.
Challenge your brain.
Join the table.
This isn’t just a quick overview — it’s a complete beginner path to understanding and playing American Mahjong.
You’ll get access to lessons covering:
✔ The tiles, suits, dragons, winds, flowers, and jokers
✔ The official National Mah Jongg League card and how to read it
✔ Table setup, dealing, and the Charleston
✔ Choosing what tiles to pass (with real examples)
✔ Turn order, gameplay flow, and picking up tiles
✔ Joker swaps, singles, and pairs
✔ Reading the table and basic strategy
✔ How to score and how to win
✔ Mahjong etiquette and table confidence
✔ How to find or start a group to play with
Plus printable reference sheets, written summaries, and examples to help everything stick.

You’ll have full access for 12 months, so you can rewatch lessons anytime you need a refresher. My hope is that you watch all of the lessons within a month of signing up, and then rewatch the parts you want to improve about a month later. The goal is to get you playing and practicing right away so that play becomes natural.
You can watch the course immediately or in a couple of sittings. It's a lot of information so taking breaks to stretch and move your body can help build brain capacity to retain what you learn. I recommend watching as much as you can until your brain feels full and then practicing with friends who play -- I explain how to find people to play with in the course -- and then come back to review the lesson after you have played a few times to learn more strategy, tips, how to read the table, and to improve your hand selection.
Yes — this course follows standard American Mahjong rules and uses the National Mah Jongg League card. I play for fun, not for points or prizes, so my teaching leans toward friendly play and building community.
Not to start the course. But if you plan to host games or practice at home, having a set is helpful. I explain what to look for and how to make sure you're getting an American set instead of the Chinese Mahjong set.
You can take the course and use a sample card to follow along before buying your own card. But, yes — I recommend you buy the current official NMJL card to play real games. I explain how to get an official one inside the course (and what to watch out for so you don’t buy a fake).
Yes. You can log in and watch from your computer, tablet, or phone.
Because this is a digital course with immediate access, all sales are final.
If you’re local to Chicagoland and the Western Suburbs, Oak Park, Forest Park, River Forest, Illinois, I do teach in-person lessons. Contact me or visit my website learnamericanmahjongwithamanda.com/classes for availability. This online course is the perfect supplement to in-person lessons.
Yes! If you’ve taken a $50 lesson with me, you can get the full online course for just $47 instead of $97.
Yes. I’ll be offering a separate, low-cost workshop focused specifically on understanding the new card and learning sample hands in a simple, beginner-friendly way.
It’s designed for beginners, but it’s also great for newer players who have played a few games and still feel unsure about the rules or flow of play. There are a lot of great tips and tricks sprinkled throughout. If you're already comfortable with the basics, reach out to learn more about my more advanced strategy course to improve your skills.
